Mazda Key Replacement – What You Need to Know

Transponder Keys

If you lose your transponder keys make sure to note the code number that is stamped on the plate that’s attached to them. This information will be needed to program a replacement key if required.

Key Fobs

A key fob can be capable of more than just unlocking your car’s door. These handy devices can be used to roll down your windows, call your car to park it and auto-park it.

Fobs communicate with the door latch via the radio system referred to as RFID. A RFID chip embedded in the fob transmits a unique coded signal that matches up with the reader’s code inside the door latch. Once the signal matches, the door opens to allow access to the owner.

The first thing to do is replace the battery, which should take only a few minutes. The majority of fobs come with a removable cover that allows for easy replacement of batteries. Your owner’s manual should provide instructions for this, and there are plenty of online videos to help you with the procedure.

It is also recommended to remove the plate attached to the key fob. It contains an identification number. This number should be noted down and kept in a secure place (not your vehicle). After removing the steering wheels, you will need to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it to avoid accidental connections.
